Chlamydia:

Background

  • Most people who have chlamydia don't know it. Often the disease has no symptoms.
  • You can pass chlamydia to other without knowing it
  • If you do not treat chlamydia, it can lead to serious health problems
  • Risk factors: age < 26, new or multiple sexual partners and inconsistent use of barrier protection

Symptoms:

  • Often no symptoms
  • pain during urination or unusual discharge (urethritis)
  • testicular pain (epididymitis or orchitis)
  • rectal pain (proctitis)
  • reactive arthritis aka Reiter syndrome (arthritis + chlamydial conjunctivitis + urethritis)

Testing

  • Tested via urine test

Treatment:

  • Easily treated with antibiotics but it's important to finish the entire prescription.
  • 1st line: doxycycline 100mg PO bid x 7 days
  • OR 
  • azithromycin 1g PO once (this treatment becoming less effective due to increasing bacterial resistance
